What is online abuse?

There are different types of online abuse. 

eSafety can help you if you experience serious online abuse. 

Cyberbullying (if you are under 18 years old)

This is very harmful content like when someone:

  • posts comments to hurt your feelings
  • shares photos or videos of you to make fun of you
  • uses fake accounts to trick you and other people.

Adult cyber abuse (if you are 18 years or older)

This is very harmful content like when someone:

  • tells you online they will hurt you
  • sends a post or email that makes you feel sad or scared
  • attacks you with hateful comments online.

Image-based abuse

This is when someone shares an intimate image or video of you without your consent

An 'intimate' image or video might show:

  • someone who is naked or partly naked
  • a person doing something private (like having a shower)
  • a person without cultural or religious clothing, like a hijab or turban.

Technology-facilitated abuse in relationships

Technology-facilitated abuse or 'tech-based abuse' can be when someone you are in a close relationship with uses technology to stalk, harass or monitor you.

Illegal and restricted online content

This is very harmful content. It can include:

  • sexual abuse of children
  • terrorist acts
  • extreme violence
  • self-harm.
