eSafety receives global internet recognition for world leading website

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has today been globally recognised with a prestigious Webby Honouree for its world-leading online safety hub — esafety.gov.au — launched last October.

The honour was received in the Government and Civil Innovation category, and ranks eSafety in the top 20 per cent of all websites submitted globally, of which there were 13,000, across 70 different countries.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said receiving a Webby Honouree that recognises excellence on the internet was a great honour for eSafety and showed that government has an important and innovative role to play in the tech and online space.

“This award is recognition that innovation needn’t just be the realm of the disrupters of Silicon Valley, it can also be driven from within government to deliver world-leading online safety advice and resources to Australians and beyond.

“The recent APS Review recommended Australian Government agencies innovate and continue to build their technical capability to reach more Australians. Our aim was to create compelling and accessible audience-based content that would engage Australian users and have them coming back for more and I think we’ve nailed the brief.”

“These resources have become even more vital as the COVID-19 crisis has grown and more of the world has moved online for work and schooling. I am extremely proud of the way our website continues to provide citizen-focused advice and resources to keep Australians safer online.”

Executive Director of The Webby Awards Claire Graves said: “Honourees like eSafety are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet. It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the 13,000 entries we received this year from over 70 countries.”

Presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, the annual awards are chosen by a judging body comprised of over two thousand industry experts and innovators including Google’s Global Head of Diversity James Heighington and Chief Creative Officer for Squarespace, David Lee.
