How to get the most out of gaming

Playing online games can be lots of fun

Gaming can be a great way to relax and unwind. You can explore new worlds with other gamers, team up and play in multiplayer games.

But gaming has downsides:

  • You can start spending so much time online that it stops you from doing your homework, meeting up with your friends or spending time with your family.
  • Other gamers might bully you or make you feel uncomfortable.

Are you gaming too much?

It can be hard to stop playing once you start. That’s because many games are designed to keep you playing for as long as possible.

If you think you might be gaming too much, talking with a trusted adult can really help.

Ask your mum, dad or carer to go through this checklist with you:

  1. Do you find it hard to get to sleep at night?

  2. Are you not getting your homework done?

  3. Do you get really annoyed when someone interrupts you when you are gaming?

  4. Are you always indoors?

What to do

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could be gaming too much.

  • Talk to your mum, dad, carer or a trusted adult about ways to spend less time gaming.
  • Talk to someone at Kids Helpline.

Watch out for cyberbullying

Sometimes other players can be mean.
