What is Hinge?

Hinge is a dating app designed for people interested in longer term relationships. When creating your profile, you must include six photos or videos. Profiles also feature details such as age, height and religion, but instead of free-form text Hinge features a library of prompt questions. You need to answer three of these questions to complete your profile. These responses can be written or recorded as audio.

When using Hinge’s ‘like’ feature, you can like an individual image, video or answer, not the entire profile. Sending a virtual rose indicates you really like someone’s content. You can review your likes and roses and then match with that person to begin a conversation – you can only chat with someone once you have  matched with them.

Hinge is free but in-app purchasing lets you access additional features, such as advanced searches, unlimited likes and boosts to display your profile more prominently.

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews or endorsements by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
