What is Apple Music?

Apple Music is a subscription-based music streaming service owned by Apple. You can use it to listen to songs, albums, playlists and radio stations across a range of devices. It is available through both the Apple Music app and a web browser. To use Apple Music, you need a paid subscription and an Apple Account.

Apple Music also includes several social and sharing features that allow users to connect and share music with others, including:

  • Profiles – you can create an Apple Music profile, which can include a profile photo, username and shared playlists.
  • Following other users – you can follow friends and other users to view shared playlists and, depending on privacy settings, music activity. You can choose who can follow you – anyone, or only people you approve.
  • Sharing playlists – you can send playlists to other people via message, email, social media app or AirDrop.
  • Collaborative playlists – multiple people can add songs to these playlists. They can also remove songs and change the order they appear in. Playlist owners can control who is allowed to participate and can choose to approve collaborators before they join. People in the playlist can also use emojis to react to songs added by other users.
  • SharePlay – this allows groups of people to listen to and control music together during supported shared experiences, including certain CarPlay sessions.
  • Personalised recommendations – these are created using listening history, library activity and music preferences to suggest artists, albums, playlists and radio stations that may be of interest.

Users should be aware that information shared through profiles, follower lists, playlist titles, playlist descriptions and public playlists may be visible to others depending on their privacy settings.

Parents and carers can access parental controls that can help limit access to explicit content for younger users.

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews, endorsements or assessments against any legislative definition by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits

  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
