What is Kids Chat?

Kids Chat is a free online chatroom that you can join as an anonymous guest or sign up to. It supports text chat and emoticons only, which you can use to chat privately or publicly. Automated censors block prohibited words from a list which the site’s owners say is updated regularly.

Kids Chat is promoted as being strictly for kids and asks you to agree to a set of terms before entering the site, including that you are between the ages of 13 and 19 years old, if entering the Kids Chat rooms. Aside from this one-click declaration, no age verification measures are in place.

On the homepage, there are links to multiple chat sites, many of which are for adults. Kids Chat is just one of several chat sites using similar formats and marketing techniques. Sites related to Kids Chat that are also aimed at children and young people may include ‘Chat to Go’, ‘Talk with Stranger’ and ‘Teen Chat’.

As a general rule, there is no way for users to verify if these sites are genuine, whether they are moderated for user safety or how many other sites they may be sharing data with. These unregulated online environments can put children at risk of predators.

Kids Chat relies on automated warnings and user reports as its only means of mitigating risk. Unfortunately, user comments on their site suggest even when reporting a user, it is difficult to get a response.

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews or endorsements by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
