Musical.ly joins the chorus against cyberbullying

Popular social networking app, Musical.ly has become the latest service to join the eSafety Commissioner’s Tier 1 social media scheme.

“We welcome Musical.ly’s commitment to work collaboratively with us and keep Australian children using their app safer online,” says eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant.

Under the Tier 1 scheme, the eSafety Office will work collaboratively with Musical.ly and utilise escalation pathways to remove serious cyberbullying material targeted toward an Australian child aged under 18.

“We are constantly working to encourage social networking apps to proactively take steps to ensure the safety of their users—especially children,” says Inman Grant

Musical.ly is a social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short music videos. The app allows users to record and edit a 15 second video clip and share it with other users.

“By signing on to the Tier 1 scheme, Musical.ly send a clear signal that they take the safety of their users seriously—especially children—and are working to ensure any potential harms are minimised,” says Inman Grant.

Recent research from the eSafety Office revealed that 12 per cent of young people aged 8 to 17 used the app in the 12 months to June 2017 confirming its popularity.

“Many Australian parents—myself included—have seen how much their kids enjoy using the Musical.ly app, so we’re pleased that parents can have some peace of mind about the safety processes and features Musical.ly are employing,” says Inman Grant

“We look forward to working closely and collaboratively with Musical.ly on cyberbullying issues and other online safety issues affecting Australian children.”
