Building capacity within the Indo-Pacific region

A strategic priority for eSafety is developing stronger and closer cooperative relationships in the Indo-Pacific region.

Online safety projects

eSafety has delivered online safety projects in Southeast Asia and the Pacific under the former Cyber and Critical Tech Cooperation ProgramExternal link[https://www.dfat.gov.au/international-relations/themes/cyber-affairs-and-critical-technology] led by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Building online safety capabilities in the Pacific

Through this project, eSafety supported the Fiji Online Safety Commission’s efforts to:

  • prevent online harms through education
  • protect people through managing complaints and working with the online industry
  • prioritise proactive system change through regional and international partnerships.

This included developing localised Fijian versions of two online safety booklets in English, Fiji Hindi and iTaukei. For more information see Resources for international audiences[https://www.esafety.gov.au/about-us/consultation-cooperation/international-engagement/resources-for-international-audiences].

This project ran from May 2020 to May 2024. eSafety continues to provide information to Pacific Island governments as they explore local and global approaches to online safety.

Providing support to address technology-facilitated gender-based violence in the Pacific

eSafety works with national and regional stakeholders in the Pacific to identify and respond to technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), through capacity development and strengthening national and regional policy responses to this issue. This includes eSafety's partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC) to strengthen the institutional response to online safety by expanding the TFGBV Training for Frontline Workers.

Launched in September 2023, the TFGBV Training for Frontline Workers in the Pacific has been developed in collaboration with Pacific partners working to end gender-based violence. The training has been piloted in multiple Pacific Island countries and is being rolled out across the region through local partners.

eSafety also provides tailored training to Pacific women who experience gender-based violence as a result of having an online presence for work.

Promoting Safety by Design in Southeast Asia

This project showcased our Safety by Design approach to online safety to governments, industry and civil society organisations across Southeast Asia. Safety by Design encourages placing user safety at the core of the design, development and deployment of tech products and services.

This project ran from June 2021 to December 2024. eSafety continues to provide information to stakeholders in Southeast Asia, and Safety by Design continues to gain traction in Southeast Asia and globally.
