What is DALL·E 3?

DALL·E 3 is an artificial intelligence (AI) text-to-image generator developed by OpenAI. You can enter a textual description or prompt into ChatGPT and it will generate a new high-resolution image for you. It is the third iteration of the DALL·E model, which was trained with millions of images from the web to associate textual descriptions and instructions with particular visual data. DALL·E 3 can generate photorealistic images or replicate artistic techniques and styles. It generates images that would require considerable artistic skills if produced by humans. Currently, DALL·E 3 only works with prompts written in English.

Images generated through DALL·E 3 contain a Content Credentials (CR) pin that identify them as being AI-generated. This comes in the form of metadata encoded in the image or a CR symbol that can be displayed on the image as a watermark. This is designed to help people identify images generated through artificial intelligence.

OpenAI has protocols to stop people from using DALL·E 3 to generate deepfakes (or extremely realistic but false depictions of real people doing something that they did not actually do) and other harmful generations. As part of these protocols, DALL·E 3 refuses to generate images of public figures identified by name. OpenAI also reports apparent child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the United States. DALL·E 3 also refuses to generate images in the style of living artists.

DALL·E 3 is available via a variety of subscriptions to ChatGPT. It is also available to developers through OpenAI’s Application Programming Interface or API, for example Bing uses this API to generate images. Developers can embed DALL·E 3 into their apps or services and pay fees for each image generated.
