Latest research from the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner shows 60 per cent of parents are concerned about the risks faced by their children online.
“While 90% of parents say their child benefits from being online, 60% of these parents fear their child is at risk of accessing inappropriate content,” says Acting Commissioner Andree Wright.
Today the Office formally launches its online resource hub for parents: iParent. This online portal provides guidance and strategies for parents to help keep their young people safe online.
“In the past 12 months, 27 per cent of parents sought or received information about online safety for their kids. We’re providing a place for all parents to find that advice they’re looking for,” says Wright.
The research also found 96 per cent of Australian parents took some form of action to keep their child safe online in the 12 months to June 2016.
“The vast majority of parents are being proactive, but they need help, with more than a third of parents saying they need information about online safety,” says Wright.
The Office has launched iParent with an infographic that highlights seven different ways parents can manage devices at home—including tablets, game consoles, smart TVs and smartphones.
The value of iParent has already been publicly recognised, with the site shortlisted as a finalist in the Information category at the Australia and New Zealand Internet Awards.
The iParent portal houses a vast range of resources, advice and ‘how to’ videos to keep parents up to date with the latest technology used by their children, with the promise of more to come.
“We offer a range of practical advice on the most popular games, apps, and social networking sites, with our resources being continually reviewed and updated with what’s trending,” says Wright.
“Our message to all Australian parents is that we’re here to help you and your family stay safe as you keep pace with the ever changing online world.”
