What is YouTube Kids?

YouTube Kids is a filtered version of YouTube, a user-generated video sharing platform, owned by Google, which allows kids to discover and watch videos. The YouTube Kids app lets parents and carers sign in and create up to 8 profiles for children, each with their own content, video recommendations and settings. Parents can manually approve videos for their kids to watch, approve collections of videos, block certain videos, set screen time limits and review what their kids have been watching. Parents can also disable autoplay, so children are empowered to proactively choose what to watch next. A YouTube Premium subscription removes paid advertisements from YouTube and allows videos to be downloaded for offline viewing.

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
