What you can do

If you feel unsafe right now, call the police on Triple Zero (000)

It is always a good idea to use social media accounts safely and to think carefully about what you post online. It is particularly important if you have concerns about your own safety – whether online or offline.

Tips for managing your social media

Follow these tips for managing your social media.

  1. Strengthen the privacy settings on your accounts so that you choose who can see your posts; know how to block people and report them to the site; and avoid posting any identifying or location information, including in photos.
  2. Tell family and friends that you are increasing the privacy of your social media so they don’t accidentally give away information about your activities or location by tagging you or checking you in.
  3. Managing online abuse. How to safely address online abuse depends on your relationship with the abuser. Is it someone you know – perhaps your partner or ex – or is it a stranger? Read more about what you can do in different situations.

If it is safe to do so, collect evidence of the abuse. Read more on our collecting evidence page.

Online abuse can be scary and very upsetting. Make sure you take care of yourself. If you can, tell friends and family what’s happening as they can give you great support. Consider getting professional support, especially if you think about the abuse a lot, and the abuse is affecting your life.
